Despite an exhausting but much needed 18 inning 3-1 win to avoid a sweep by the Cardinals, the team’s offensive futility was on full display in St. Louis.

To begin, the Mets tied their franchise record for stranding men on base with 25. Terry Collins said afterward, “I’ve never seen more flying helmets going down that runway.”

The Mets were an incredible (in a bad way) 1-for-26 with RISP on Sunday, and overall they are 3-for-62 with runners in scoring position over the past eight games.

Lucas Duda was 0-for-7 in the game and is now 13 for his last 98. He’s now batting .235 for the season with 96 strikeouts in 323 at-bats.

John Mayberry started and was hitless in three plate appearances before being replaced by Curtis Granderson who ended up being the big difference maker in the win. Mayberry is now batting .182 with 9 RBIs in 53 games.

Eric Campbell came in as a pinch hitter but stayed in the game going 0-for-3 and is now batting .170 this season.

Some believe the team would score at least a few more runs if Terry Collins would bat Granderson in the middle of the order, but the Mets manager got feisty when he was asked again.

“You guys keep bringing that up, come up with a different leadoff hitter,” Collins told reporters. “Give me a guy. Everybody keeps asking me why don’t you put him in the middle? Well, who are we leading off?”

Of Granderson’s 14 home runs, 12 of them have come with the bases empty.
