Closer Jason Isringhausen celebrates his 299th save as the New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres tonight by a score of 5-4 after staging yet another late-game comeback at Citi Field.
Veteran left-hander Chris Capuano started for the Mets and was king of shaky at times allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out three. Capuano looked fatigued after the fourth inning and has now allowed four earned runs in four of his last five outings. His ERA since the All-Star break now stands at 5.81.
Manny Acosta and D.J. Carrasco pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while Izzy as I mentioned picked up the save with a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth, the 299th save of his career.
* Note – Manny Acosta left the game with a broken fingernail on his right pinkie.
Offensively, Lucas Duda remained hot and went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lift his average to .280 for the season. Duda is batting .381 (8-21) with one home run and five RBI in the month of August.
Angel Pagan batted leadoff and had a home run, his 6th, in four at-bats.
The biggest run in the game however, came when Ruben Tejada walked in the winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eight inning when the Mets scored three runs. Tejada is 2-5 (.400) with two walks and seven RBI this year with the bases loaded.
For the Mets it was their second late inning comeback in two days, and though it was not nearly dramatic as Monday night’s 9-8 walk-off win, it was a satisfying victory all the same. It’s the third time in franchise history that they have rallied in back-to-back games for wins when trailing by two-plus runs in the eighth inning or later since April 23-24 in 1965.
The Mets and Padres will continue their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:10 PM, with R.A. Dickey (5-10, 3.72 ERA) taking on Aaron Harang (10-3, 3.91 ERA).
