The New York Mets said via Twitter that David Wright’s injury will require 6-8 weeks of rest from baseball activities during which he will undergo appropriate physiotherapy.

Add to that another 2-3 weeks of resumed baseball activities, simulated games, and a rehab assignment and you’re looking at a late August return. That blows…

Original Report

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported on Thursday, that David Wright is expected to be out for an extended period of time and that infielder Matt Reynolds is en route to Miami to replace Wright once he’s placed on the disabled list.

On Friday morning, Rosenthal went further, adding that a team source said Wright will be out a minimum of 4-6 weeks “at least.”

The Mets are expected to make an official statement later this morning. We will update this post once we receive the official word from Mets media relations.

Wright received an injection in his neck on Tuesday that required 48 hours to take effect. He was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his neck and is also dealing with right shoulder discomfort. That’s in addition to the spinal stenosis condition.

“Any time I miss a game with something other than my back, it’s pretty concerning,” Wright said on Saturday. “My back gives me enough trouble, so now that it is something different, it’s frustrating. … If I’m physically able to go out there and help the team, I try to do that. But if I can’t help the team, then I can’t go out there and play.”

It is not yet clear if Wright will require surgery, but Bobby Parnell required surgery for the same issue, according to manager Terry Collins.

Wright, 33, has been out of the lineup for the past five games and is batting .226 this season with seven homers and 14 RBIs in 137 at-bats, while striking out 55 times.

He is set to earn $20 million a season through 2018, then $15 million in ’19 and $12 million in ’20 for a total of $67 million in guaranteed dollars.

The Mets do have insurance on Wright’s contract and can recoup 75 percent of his salary once the DL stint exceeds 60 days.

If that 4-6 week timeline is true, it puts Wright’s return sometime in August after a rehab assignment, assuming there are no setbacks.
