As expected, the Mets today activated third baseman David Wright from the 60-day disabled list.
The plan, after Wright’s impassioned press conference earlier this month, was to have the captain active for the final homestand.
It’s been an uphill battle for Wright, who hasn’t appeared in a major league game since 2016. The longtime Met has worked hard to get back on the playing field, and will get one last hoorah during this final homestand of the season.
Wright has two years left on his contract, but will likely not play in a big league game beyond this season. He will not retire, but will be unable to play the next two years.
The Virginia native will start at third base this Saturday, Sept. 29 in what is slated to be in front of a sold out crowd.
The Mets announced today that the gates for Citi Field will open at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday so fans can see the Mets and Wright during batting practice.
To make room for Wright on the 25 and 40-man rosters, reliever Eric Hanhold has been placed on the disabled list with a strained oblique.
