dilson herrera hr

According to the Mets Twitter account, the team has recalled Dilson Herrera from Triple-A Las Vegas, and a corresponding roster move will be made Friday.

Herrera was tearing it up for the 51’s at the time of his call-up, hitting at a .375/.407/.513 clip.

After a Wilmer Flores error tonight, as well as Daniel Murphy’s poor play, the Mets will call up Herrera, who appeared in 18 games and went 30-for-80.

Sandy Alderson had stated that they didn’t intend to call up Herrera unless he would “be getting regular playing time.”

So what does that mean? Will Murphy shift over to third until Wright comes back, and Herrera will man second base, which he has been playing exclusively?

Or do the Mets have something else planned? They aren’t going to call him up and sit him on the bench, I’ll tell you that much. He’ll be playing everyday at least for the time being.

I’m going to guess that Jack Leathersich will be sent back down to the minors, after he allowed a hard hit ball to the lone hitter he faced against the Marlins last night, and let up a three-run double to Bryce Harper tonight.

Thoughts from Joe D.

Whether you agree with this move or not, credit the front office for their boldness and quick reaction to Thursday night’s debacle.

As you know from our daily minor league coverage on MMO, Herrera was raking in Las Vegas as his .375 average and .919 OPS would attest. And just yesterday I posted Wally Backman’s comments on Herrera whom he called a future All Star second baseman.

As Rob speculated above, the front office confirmed that Daniel Murphy will be sliding all the way over to third base and Herrera will play every day at second base, relegating Eric Campbell to the bench which he’s best suited for.

The question is what happens when David Wright returns from the disabled list in about eight days? Obviously Herrera is not going to sit so it’s either back to the minors or is something else in the works? Perhaps a trade?

If Herrera goes back to Las Vegas then it’s back to Murphy and Flores up the middle and that brings us back to where we started from.

It’s obvious that Thursday night’s turn of events defensively is what precipitated the promotion of Herrera as perhaps the Mets patience is growing thin.

But the move for now appears only to be a stopgap measure and the next few days bears monitoring.

More to come on this.
