The Mets pounded Braves pitching for 14 hits en route to a 7-4 victory this afternoon at Citi Field to gain a split of their four game series with Atlanta.
Daniel Murphy and Marlon Byrd led the hit parade with three hits a piece including the 26th double of the season for Murphy who looks to be breaking out of a month-long slump during this series.
David Wright collected two hits and drove in a run with a ground rule double that the umpires ruled a triple. It led to the ejection of Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez who had a good gripe, but the umps weren’t having any of it.
Josh Satin started at first base and was on base three times, and catcher John Buck had a big three-RBI day with a pair of clutch hits of his own.
Zack Wheeler started for the Mets and went six innings allowing four runs, three earned on four hits and two walks. The rookie righthander struck out five and earned his fourth win of the season, and despite getting tagged for two home runs, he gave the Mets a quality start.
The bullpen was stellar today and David Aardsma, LaTroy Hawkins and Bobby Parnell each pitched a scoreless inning. For Parnell he earns his 20th save of the season.
Eric Young Jr. left the game after three innings with right knee pain, possibly related to his play last night that led to Tim Hudson breaking his ankle.
A solid win against a tough team as the Mets head to Washington for another four game series including a doubleheader on Friday that will have Jenrry Mejia making his season debut in the afternoon game opposite right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (12-5, 3.01 ERA). In the nightcap, Matt Harvey (8-2, 2.23) takes on Ross Ohlendorf (2-0, 2.03).
