The Mets (27-21) took the series against the Diamondbacks (20-37) on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-6 triumph at Chase Field.

New York brought home the win after Pete Alonso came up clutch with a go-ahead RBI single to break the ninth-inning tie before Edwin Diaz worked a 1-2-3 bottom half of the frame to pick up the save. Miguel Castro (2-1) earned the win on the mound.

The Mets offense knocked 16 hits on Wednesday evening. Dominic Smith was 3-for-4 with a walk, Francisco Lindor went 3-for-5, and James McCann was 3-for-5 with a home run.

The game got interesting early, as both teams combined for nine runs in the opening inning in the desert.

The Mets kicked things off and grabbed a 3-0 lead before recording an out. Back-to-back singles by Jonathan Villar and Lindor, followed by a deep fly ball sent into left field for a James McCann homer put the Mets on the board. McCann has been hot as of lately, the catcher is 7-for-14 with five extra-base hits in his last five games.

A trio of singles by Alonso, Kevin Pillar, and Smith loaded the bases following the homer, and Brandon Drury grounded into a double-play for the first two outs of the game, sending in Alonso to make it 4-0 Mets.

Unfortunately for New York, Arizona quickly stole the lead in the home half of the first. David Peterson took the mound and got shelled early. He gave up four runs on three walks and three hits — including a two-run homer to Ketel Marte — before being pulled for Robert Gsellman after recording just one out. Gsellman entered with runners on first and third and gave up a single to Arizona’s starter, Madison Bumgarner, to make it 5-4 Diamondbacks. The run was charged to Peterson.

Gsellman ended up having a nice outing, keeping New York in position for a win. The reliever tossed 3.2 innings and allowed just two hits, adding a strikeout. With three straight base hits from Pillar, Smith, and Drury to open the fifth inning, the Mets regained a 6-5 lead.

Seth Lugo entered in the sixth inning, and Arizona continued to put up a fight, as Pavin Smith doubled and pair of singles by Nick Ahmed and Ildemaro Vargas once again tied the game up, 6-6. Lugo struck out two in the inning. Miguel Castro took over for Lugo in the seventh and tossed a 1-2-3 inning. He also worked the eighth, walking one but allowing no other baserunners.

With a tie game in the top of the ninth, Lindor knocked a lead-off double and advanced to third on a passed ball, giving New York the go-ahead run just 90 feet away. Alonso knocked a one-out single to left field to drive in Lindor, giving the Mets yet another lead. They held onto this one, though, as Edwin Diaz retired the DBacks in order to lock in the win, picking up his 10th save of the season.

The Mets will send Taijuan Walker (4-1, 1.84 ERA) to the mound Thursday in the first of a four-game series in San Diego against the Padres. He’ll face Yu Darvish, who’s 5-1 with a 2.16 ERA.

Fans can catch the game at 10:10 PM ET on June 3. It will be broadcast on SNY, and WCBS 880.
