New York Mets Catcher Mike Nickeas (13) Congratulates

R.A. Dickey shut down the pesky Marlins in the opener, while Dillon Gee pitched solidly in the nightcap as the Mets completed a doubleheader sweep of the Fish. Gee pitched six effective innings, while Dickey dominated in game one pitching seven spotless innings in a 2-1 victory for Dickey’s first win since July 25. The Mets will continue their 5-game series with the Marlins tonight at 7:10 pm as Mike Pelfrey (7-10, 4.60 ERA) goes against Javier Vazquez (7-11, 4.63 ERA).

In between games yesterday, the Mets activated Jose Reyes who arrived from Binghamton earlier in the day, where he had been on a rehab assignment. To make room on the roster, the Mets optioned outfielder Mike Baxter to Triple-A Buffalo.

Ike Davis ran Thursday, Friday and Monday, and will do so again today, according to Sandy Alderson. Then a determination will be made this Friday on whether Davis will require left ankle surgery, which would be completed before Labor Day.

Alderson also told reporters that Johan Santana may return to a minor league game next weekend, and that it’s possible Santana could pitch an inning or two in the majors before the season’s completion. Santana has been shut down after his last rehab appearance for Class A St. Lucie, on July 28.

The New York Mets game at Florida on Wednesday, September 7 has been moved to 5:10 p.m.  The Marlins graciously accommodated a request from the Mets to allow the team to travel back to New York for their September 8 doubleheader vs. Atlanta starting at 4:10 p.m. The game on September 7 was originally scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m.

“We understand the challenges and inconvenience caused by moving the start time of a game at this late stage of the season,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson.  “We greatly appreciate that Jeffrey Loria, David Samson, Larry Beinfest and the Marlins organization are so graciously wiling to recognize and share in the burden caused by Hurricane Irene.”

Finally, in case you missed it, RHP Collin McHugh, RHP Brandon Moore, OF Juan Lagares, and 2B Reese Havens were told that they will be part of the Mets contingent selected to play in the Arizona Fall League this year.
