El Paso 5, Las Vegas (66-53) 4 Walk-Off

The 51’s lost on a walk-off single by Hector Gomez that deflected off the glove of the diving Matt Reynolds with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning. Prior to that Zack Thornton  intentionally walked Will Middlebrooks with two outs and runners on second and third. Thornton suffered his fourth loss as he walked five batters (three intentional) in 1.1 innings. Logan Verrett made the start needing 86 pitches to get through 4 innings allowing three runs on six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

Dario Alvarez had his 21.1 innings scoreless streak snapped when Thornton allowed his inherited runner score in the 8th inning. It was the first run he has allowed since May 30th, Dario pitched 1.1 innings walking run and striking out three. He has 36 strikeouts in his last 22.2 innings with the league hitting only .085/.198/.113 against him during that span.

Darrell Ceciliani had a four hit night with three RBI and his 7th homerun of the season. Here is video of the homerun. Reynolds was 2-5 with a run scored and his 11th stolen base, he has thirteen hits and eight RBI in his last ten games.

Kevin Plawecki was 1-4 with two strikeouts while batting sixth and catching the entire game, he did allow four successful stolen base attempts. Brandon Nimmo was 1-2 with two walks and a stolen base while batting in the eighth spot in the lineup. He played right field and threw out a runner at home trying to score in the 4th inning. Binghamton (64-52) 5, Altoona 4

The B’Mets had a rally in the 8th inning very similar to the current big league club scoring four runs in the top of the 8th with two outs to take a 5-2 lead. L.J. Mazzilli had a two-run single in the 8th inning that would turn out to be the game-winning hit. It was his second straight two-hit game and he has four RBI over his last 4 games. Gavin Cecchini got the rally going with his second hit of the night (2-5) and scored a run. He also had his 28th error (throwing) but had this great defensive play as well.

Backup catcher Alberto Cordero went 1-4 with just his second homerun of the season and here is video of the blast. Jared King went 2-4, he is hitting .423 with seven RBI over his last ten games. Jonathan Galvez was 1-3 with a walk, run scored, and RBI.

Rainy Lara had a strong start going 7 innings allowing two runs on four hits (2 HR’s) and three strikeouts while walking none. He moved to 6-4 with a 3.75 ERA for Binghamton this year. Paul Sewald stranded the tying run in the 8th and pitched a perfect 9th inning with two strikeouts to pick up his 19th save of the year. Box Score

St. Lucie (59-56) 1, Jupiter 1 Suspended

David Wright and Kirk Nieuwenhuis had their rehab game suspended in the bottom of the first inning. They will resume the game at 5:05 tonight and it will be followed by a 7 inning game. Kirk walked while Wright struck out in their lone at bats of the night.

Savannah (67-48) 9, Rome 4

The Sand Gnats pitching relinquished a 4-0 lead in the 6th inning before the offense stepped up to score two runs in the 7th and three in the 8th to win their 10th straight game. They have now won 17 of 19 games to pull into a tie with the Asheville Tourists for the second half division lead. Ben Griset picked up his first win of the year pitching 1.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Casey Delgado made the start going 6.1 allowing four runs (three earned) on five his and three walks while striking out five.

Eudor Garcia led the Savannah offense going 4-5 with his 20th double, two RBI and three runs scored while extending his hitting streak to six games. Wuilmer Becerra was 3-5 with two runs scored and his 48th RBI of the year. He is now hitting .298/.347/.444 in 96 games with his average ranking 7th in the South Atlantic League. Shortstop Luis Guillorme extended his hitting streak to 11 games going 2-5 with his 48th RBI, 11th double, and two runs scored.

Jean Rodriguez went 1-3 with two walks, RBI, and a double to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Center fielder Patrick Biondi was 1-3 with two walks, RBI, and two stolen bases giving him 30 for the year. My midseason 24th ranked prospect John Mora went 2-4 with a walk, his 20th double, and two RBI giving him 58 on the year. Over his last ten games he has hit .375 with six runs, five RBI, and a 6/4 BB/SO ratio. Box Score

State College 2, Brooklyn (25-27) 0 

The Cyclones fell to 3-10 in the month of August and are now 1.5 games back from the first place Staten Island Yankees. Starter Kevin Canelon deserved to win going 7 innings allowing two runs on six hits and struck out a career high eleven batters. Johnny Magliozzi and Carlos Valdez each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The offense produced only six baserunners all night and hit into two double plays while having one runner picked off limiting their scoring chances. Catcher Jose Garcia was 2-3 with his 4th double of the year, he is hitting .370 over his last ten games. First basemen Jeffrey Diehl was 2-4 and has now hit safely in 8 of the last 10 games. Vinny Siena went 1-4 and David Thompson was 0-4 dropping his average to .226 for the year. Box Score

Kingsport (26-23) 8, Johnson City 2

Left fielder Kevin Kaczmarski continued his torrid month of August going 2-4 with a walk, his 14th stolen base, and two runs scored. For the month he is hitting .415/.448/.509 with seven stolen bases, twelve runs scored, and ten RBI in 12 games. Patrick Mazeika went 1-4 with a two-run homerun in the 8th inning, his 5th of the season. His 39 RBI lead the Appalachian league and his .572 slugging percentage ranks second.

Ivan Wilson played center field going 2-4 with a run scored and only one strikeout. Dash Winningham was 1-4 with his 14th double, run scored, and his 35th RBI. Milton Ramos was 1-4, he is now 8-23 over his last 5 games.

Merandy Gonzalez got the start going 5 innings allowing one run on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Harol Gonzalez picked up his second win of the season going the final four innings giving up one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five. The Mets are now tied with the Greeneville Astros for first place in the Appalachian League West division Box Score

GCL Cardinals 2, GCL Mets (25-21) 0

All the Mets offense could muster was singles by Ricardo Cespedes, Anthony Dimino, and Walter Rasquin. Desmond Lindsay returned from not playing the last two games going 0-2 with a walk while batting 6th and playing center field. Through 11 games he is hitting .314/.415/.429 with six walks and eleven strikeouts.

Mets 3rd round pick Max Wotell pitched a scoreless 8th inning allowing a single and striking out one. In his 7 career innings he has allowed two earned runs on two hits and six walks while striking out eleven. He has not allowed an extra base hit yet in his young pro career. Box Score
