Jonah Tong had one of his better outings of the season Friday night in Triple-A Syracuse’s 8-1 victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He struck out nine and allowed one earned run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings to lower his ERA to 5.59. But the 23-year-old also walked four, tying a season high, and needed 91 pitches to come up one out short of qualifying for a win.

Tong’s strikeouts per nine innings are down (14.2 to 10.6 entering Friday’s game), and his walks per nine innings are up (3.7 to 5.3) compared to a year ago when he pitched to a 1.43 ERA over 113 2/3 innings, with 102 of those innings coming at Double-A.
