Espinosa broke out of a 1-for-16 slump with a a two RBI single in the top of the third inning and a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to vault himself into the top ten in the International League in RBIs with 22 now on the season. Travis Taijeron entered the game in the top of the eighth inning as a pinch hitter for Eric Hanhold and hit his team leading eighth home run of the season to put the Mets ahead 6-1. Despite partially splitting playing time, Taijeron still ranks sixth in the International League in home runs now. After an o-for-4 night in his first game back in (AAA), Dom Smith made a lot of hard contact last night resulting in a ground rule double, hard line drive outs to center and left field, and a line drive single.

Santiago pitched into the sixth inning for the first time this season netting his first quality start and second win of the season. It was also his seventh straight start allowing three or fewer runs to score.  Hanhold, Sewald, and O’Rourke combined for three innings of scoreless work allowing only one hit to secure the win and pull the Mets within 1.5 games of first place in the IL North Division.

Gonzalez collected hit first pro hit and added another later in the game on a night that he didn’t allow any on the mound.

Blake Tiberi broke out of a 2-for-17 slump with three single game, scoring twice, to raise his batting average 20 points on the season. Carlos Cortes and Luis Carpio both had strong nights at the plate with two of the three RBI’s on the night.

Tommy Wilson continues to be locked in on the mound tossing his second straight scoreless appearance with six innings of shut out baseball yesterday. Renteria entered the game in the top of the seventh inning and had a rough start allowing a lead-off double followed by a wild pitch to put the runner at third base. While the run did score, he was able to settle in generating two ground ball outs while striking out one to preserve the lead. He did run into more trouble in the eighth inning but Blake Taylor was able to bail him out with a strike-out with runners on first and second to end the inning followed by a solid ninth inning to close the game.

Charleston (18-14) 7, Columbia (9-22) 1 Box Score

While the Fireflies offense was mostly quiet, Gerson Molina continued his hot start in the South Atlantic League with his second straight multi hit game and his second double of the season. The Cuban center-fielder also threw out a base runner trying to stretch a double into a triple from center field.

Butto was in trouble right from the get go in this one allowing a single and a two run home run to open the game. He would allow three more runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the second inning on back to back to back doubles to put the Fireflies in an early 5-1 hole. Kisena tossed a clean fourth inning but would allow two runs to score in the fifth on three straight base hits including a double and a triple to extend the deficit to 7-1. Ramos and Mitchell would team up to stop the bleeding with three scoreless innings of work striking out five of the eleven batters they faced.
