Mets backup catcher Tomas Nido had arguably his best game as a major league on Wednesday when he went 2-for-4 with a homer and picked off a runner at first base.

Nido extended the Mets lead to 2-0 in the second inning when he hit a Matt Strahm 2-1 changeup 405 feet to center field. He would single to right field in his next at-bat to secure just his third major league multi-hit game.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Nido showed off one of the reasons why he’s regarded as a plus defender behind the plate. Padres starter Strahm was trying to get a bunt down but instead whiffed on the 0-2 pitch and Nido turned threw to first base to nab Manuel Margot for a double play.

It was a strong showing for the 25-year-old catcher despite striking out in two key spots later in the game.

Nido has gone 4-for-12 with a double, homer, and four RBI since being recalled on April 28.
