Sacramento 8, Las Vegas 4

The Las Vegas 51s(3-1) were handed their first loss of the season Sunday as they were unable to hold Sacramento in check in the seventh, falling in an 8-4 decision to the River Cats.

Carlos Torres got the nod for the 51s and put out a solid effort, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out a trio, taking a no-decision. The name of the game for Torres was getting in and out of jams, as he allowed at least two baserunners in three of the six frames he pitched in, allowing a run to cross in the third and Dylan Owen allowed an inherited runner to score in the sixth.

In the third, the RiverCats drew first blood on a Grant Green RBI double that scored Jemile Weeks from first. In the sixth, Torres left with two out and a runner on for Owen, who gave up a double to the first batter he faced to give Sacramento a 2-0 lead.

The 51s rallied in the seventh to tie the game at that point with two runs, and they also dropped a two-spot in the eighth. In the seventh, Andrew Brown came home on a fly ball off the bat of Zach Lutz, then Josh Satin scored on a Brian Bixler RBI single. The eighth was the same story, except Reese Havens had the sac fly and Wilmer Flores had an RBI single to score Omar Quintanilla and Juan Lagares respectively.

However, despite the late offensive outburst by Las Vegas, the turning point of this game was in the bottom of the seventh when Dylan Owen came on for a second inning of work. After allowing three of the first four batters to reach base and load the bases, Michael Choice dug in and served up a grand slam, putting Sacramento up 6-2. Owen would stay in to face Michael Taylor, who also took him deep, which led to him taking the loss after allowing five runs in just 2/3 of an inning of work. Armando Rodriguez relieved Owen and retired the side, but not before allowing the third jack of the inning to Stephen Vogt to make it an 8-2 ballgame.

The 51s start a series with the Fresno Grizzlies tonight at 10:05 ET with Darin Gorski taking the mound for Las Vegas.
