Recap

The Mets thought they could get away with using Miguel Batista as a spot starter today against the Giants and Lincecum. They thought wrong. All us fans saw this coming, though. He only lasted 3.2 innings and was blasted for six runs, three earned, seven hits, two being homeruns, walking three and striking out two. I somewhat understand moving Santana back to Tuesday, but Batista starting? I still don’t get what the Mets see in him as a reliever. Yeah, he did decent in his few appearances with them last season, but he shouldn’t be on that mound in inning one. The Mets basically handed the Giants the win with this one. Batista gets smacked with the loss and now has a 6.23 ERA. At least it’s still lower than Lincecum’s.

Acosta finished the fourth inning for Batista and then Terry Collins handed the ball to the Taxi guy, Jeremy Hefner. The youngster pitched three great innings, allowing three hits, and walked one, but he did his job and kept the gap where Batista left it. Welcome to the ball club, Hefner. Parnell and Ramirez round out the next two innings with no runs allowed.

The boys keep hitting, and keep sitting on the bases. Despite eight hits and six walks, the Mets left 25 men on base. This is just unacceptable. These men need to touch home in order to win. Today the big offenders were Wright with six, Duda with two, and Ike Davis with a whopping eight men left on base, including two bases loaded situations. They combine for 0-10 and sixteen men left on. Wright crashed today, Duda still struggling, and Ike…well you gotta think that maybe this Valley Fever is really affecting him, as his average is .138 and had a very costly error today.

Kirk and Murphy continue to do well with two hits each. Tejada and Thole each get a hit and Tejada’s defense is just impeccable.

Notes

Josh Thole has now reached safely in all 14 games this season in which he’d had a plate appearance.

Jason Bay’s seven game hit streak comes to an end as he gets out in his one pinch-hitting at-bat.

Mets have lost five of their last seven games. They are no longer the undefeated Mets in the first four games of the season.

Following the game, the team demoted RHP Jeremy Hefner and activated infielder Jordany Valdespin, who will be active for game 2 of today’s double header

Goat of the Game

Ike Davis is just not being Ike Davis. 0-4, two Ks, an error, and left eight men stranded.
