The New York Mets have discussed free agent Eric Hosmer internally according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports on WFAN this afternoon.

Heyman notes though it remains highly unlikely the Mets sign the first baseman given their payroll constraints and the type of deal Hosmer is looking for.

Dominic Smith struggled in his limited major league time which has led to the Mets being connected to numerous first baseman free agent including Logan Morrison, Carlos Santana and Adam Lind.

Hosmer, 28, had a career-season in 2017 when he hit .318/.385/.498 with 31 doubles, 25 doubles and 94 RBI for the Kansas City Royals. He also posted a career-high 132 OPS+ and played in all 162 games. He’s a career .284/.342/.439 hitter in seven major league seasons.

Earlier this offseason, MLB Trade Rumors predicted Hosmer would sign a deal worth six years, $132 million.
