Jeremy, Jeffress

According to Jon Heyman of FanRagSports, the Mets have interest in Brewers’ relievers RHP Jeremy Jeffress and LHP Will Smith.

While Jeffress and Smith have preformed well this season, Heyman reports they could come at a steep price.

“The Brewers are getting big interest in their pen guys, especially Will Smith and Jeremy Jeffress,” Heyman says. “They don’t feel an urgency to deal them since they are under control for years, but in this market, they should be able to get someone to seriously overpay.”

In his first season as a closer, Jeffress has 23 saves with a 2.23 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 40.1 innings pitched. During his seven year career, he has a 2.95 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 189 innings.

Meanwhile, Smith has a 1.93 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with 16 strikeouts in 18.2 innings this season. He has a 3.82 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 270 innings during his five year career.

Heyman says two other possibilities for the Mets are Angels relievers Joe Smith and Huston Street.

Smith, a former Met, has a 4.32 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 33.1 innings this season. While Street, a 12 year veteran, has a 5.03 ERA and 1.96 WHIP with eight saves in 19.2 innings.
