Buffalo Bisons 13 – Rochester Red Wings 4

This has to be considered another positive outing for Mark Cohoon. The numbers still aren’t spectacular, but he is getting his control back to where it needs to be and as a ressult getting back to being that pitcher he was most of last year. He settled down after giving up a two-out, two-run homerun in the 1st inning to last seven innings while throwing just 90 pitches. He threw that few pitches while still striking out seven men. That is called being economical. It is interesting that the one walk and one hit by pitch Cohoon allowed came around to score. Shows how little margin for error is.

The Bisons beat up on a very good prospect in Kyle Gibson. They had a six run 3rd inning in which all nine men came to the plate and that was capped off with a Zach Lutz double and Val Pascucci three-run homer. They came back the next inning and put up three runs, two of which scored on a passed ball and wild pitch. Pascucci added a two-run homer in the 8th when the game was already well out of hand.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Michael Fisher (1-for-5, 2 R, RBI)
  • Zach Lutz (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI, 3 K)
  • Mark Cohoon( W, 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, BB, 7 SO, HBP, HR, 5:6 GO:AO)

Stars of the Game: 1. Val Pascucci (18pts) 2. Mark Cohoon (3pts) 3. Luis Figueroa (12pts)

Binghamton Mets 4 – New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3

Tobi Stoner pitched very well for the B-Mets making it into the 7th inning. He held the Fisher Cats scoreless through the first six until he gave up a solo homer. He recorded one out in the 7th before giving up a double and being pulled for Rick Brooks who was perfect through his 1.2 innings of work. Rhiner Cruz allowed four straight singles in the 9th to give up two runs, tie the game, and blow the lead.

Salomon Manriquez went deep for the fifth time this year in the 2nd inning. The B-Mets had the makings of a huge inning in the 6th when Jordany Valdespin and Josh Satin leadoff with singles and then Allan Dykstra walked to load the bases. Manriquez singled to drive home to runs, but Raul Reyes grounded into a double play and no more runs scored. After Cruz blew the save, Niuman Romero (yeah, who?) hit a two-out single in the 9th to keep things alive and then Eric Campbell followed with a walk-off double.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Matt Den Dekker (0-for-3, K)
  • Jordany Valdespin (1-for-4, R, 2 K)
  • Josh Satin (2-for-4, 2B, R, 2 K)
  • Allan Dykstra (0-for-3, BB)

Stars of the Game: 1. Salomon Manriquez (17pts) 2. Tobi Stoner (5pts) 3. Eric Campbell (25pts)

St Lucie Mets 5 – Clearwater Threshers 2

Another successful yet not dominating performance from Greg Peavey. He allowed at least one runner in every inning, but escaped from each of them without allowing a run except the 3rd when it was a Jefry Marte error that set it up. Josh Edgin was terrific in relief to earn his 4th save in High-A and makes it 20 on the year.

David Wright got things going again for the Mets with a double in the 1st inning and was singled in by Wilmer Flores. Flores would eventually score on a Cory Vaughn two-out single. The Mets continued to make it very hard on a top pitching prospect and scored again in the 2nd on a Juan Centeno double and Wright single. Every batter reached base at least once and Robbie Shields was the only one to not get a hit.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Wilmer Flores (2-for-5, R, RBI)
  • Jefry Marte (1-for-5)
  • Cory Vaughn (1-for-4, RBI)
  • Robbie Shields (0-for-3, BB, K)
  • Cesar Puello (2-for-4, HR, 2 R, RBI)

Stars of the Game: 1. Cesar Puello (32pts) 2. Wilmer Flores (49pts) 3. Juan Centeno (11pts)

Savannah Sand Gnats 2 – Augusta GreenJackets 5

And this is way prospects are prospects and not major league players. If you take a look at Ryan Fraser‘s last six starts you will see three brilliant starts and three awful ones. Yes, I know it sounds like Mike Pelfrey so let those jokes out now. His control was all over the place and walked at least one in every inning except the 3rd. In the 4th a triple brought home two runs and then Albert Cordero tried to throw behind the runner at third, threw wide, and the run scored. It made no difference because the next man singled anyway. Luis Rojas replaced Fraser and was just dreadful. The two-run homerun he allowed was the least of his troubles.

The offense just got beat up by the GreenJackets starter who nearly threw a complete game. Wilfredo Tovar picked up a two-out RBI in the 3rd to score a run and then they mustered out a run on a groundout following the pitcher change.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Darrell Ceciliani (0-for-3, BB)
  • Wilfredo Tovar (1-for-4, RBI)
  • Aderlin Rodriguez (0-for-4, R)
  • Albert Cordero (1-for-4, K, E)
  • Ryan Fraser (L, 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 2 SO, 4:6 GO:AO)

Stars of the Game: 1. Wilfredo Tovar (30pts) 2. Alonzo Harris (18pts) 3. Rafael Fernandez (34pts)

Brooklyn Cyclones 4 – Lowell Spinners 1

Randy Fontanez was given his first professional start and only lasted three innings, but was very effective. He had a brief lapse of control in the 3rd when he walked a man, advanced him to second on a wild pitch, and then allowed him to score on a double. Tyson Seng got bailed out by a caught stealing from catcher Xorge Carillo, which enabled him to allow no runs to score and lower his ERA to a sparkling 0.55. Brian Harrison singled home Cole Frenzel in the 6th, Charley Thurber followed with a sac fly in the same inning, and then Richard Lucas belted his second homerun of the year in the 8th.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Danny Muno (0-for-4, K)
  • Cole Frenzel (1-for-3, 2 R, BB)
  • Richard Lucas (2-for-3, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB)
  • Brian Harrison (1-for-3, BB)
  • Travis Taijeron (2-for-4, 2B)

Stars of the Game: 1. Richard Lucas (14pts) 2. Cole Frenzel (7pts) 3. Brian Harrison (14pts)

Kingsport Mets 1 – Bluefield Blue Jays 9

Domingo Tapia was hit with a line drive off the bat of the second batter of the game and had to leave. Dustin Emmons came in and allowed both of men Tapia allowed to reach to score. Jared West came on in the 5th and pushed the game out of reach with some poor pitching. Carlos Leyva walked to lead off the 8th and came around to score on a Julio Concepcion two-out single.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Yucarybert De La Cruz (0-for-5, K)
  • Julio Concepcion (3-for-4, RBI, K, SB)
  • Greg Pron (0-for-3, BB, K)
  • Jeff Glenn (0-for-3, BB, K, CS)
  • Camden Maron (0-for-2, 2 BB)
  • Domingo Tapia (0.0 IP, H, 2 R, BB)

Stars of the Game: 1. Julio Concepcion (14pts) 2. Tant Shepherd (4pts) 3. Camden Maron (17pts)

GCL Mets 2 – GCL Astros 1

Gabriel Ynoa just doesn’t strike anyone out, but he continues to put up great numbers and impress. It is pretty clear by the numbers he has a solid sinker and he is just 18-years-old so it is possible the Ks will come with age as he adds onto that 158 lbs. frame. He has great command though, just one walk in 27 innings. Congrats to Joe Tuschak who got to experience his first pro hit and hit by pitch in one game.

Top prospect performances (Boxscore):

  • Juan Carlos Gamboa (0-1, BB)
  • Joe Tuschak (1-for-3, R, HBP, 2 K)
  • Kai Gronauer (1-for-4, RBI, 2 K)
  • Eudy Pina (1-for-4, K)
  • Gilbert Gomez (0-for-4, R, K)
  • Gabriel Ynoa (W, 7 IP, 6 H, R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 7:8 GO:AO)

Stars of the Game: 1. Gabriel Ynoa (3pts) 2. Joe Tuschak (2pts) 3. Jorge Rivero (1pt)
