The Mets enter their game on Wednesday night against the Marlins with a 1-6 record against Miami, Chicago Cubs, and the Washington Nationals at home in September. That missed opportunity against bad teams is certainly part of the reason the Mets will start the final seven games of their 2022 schedule tied for the National League East division with the Atlanta Braves.

Overall in September, the Mets have gone 14-10 (.583 winning percentage compared to .626 for the season) in September in what was supposed to be their soft portion of the schedule that would help them hold onto their division lead.

Here’s the schedule to finish the season for the Mets:

  • 1 game vs Marlins at Citi Field
  • 3 games vs Braves in Atlanta
  • 3 games vs Nationals at Citi Field

Here’s the schedule to finish the season for the Braves:

  • 1 game vs Nationals in Washington
  • 3 games vs Mets at home
  • 3 games vs Marlins in Miami

The Mets get to close out the season at home hosting the last-place Nationals while the Braves head to Miami to play the fourth-place Marlins. Of course, before that is the biggest series of the baseball season with the Mets and Braves playing three games in Atlanta.

Major League Baseball has discussed how to proceed with the series as Hurricane Ian touches ground in Florida and could bring significant rain to Georgia this weekend. It looks like MLB has decided to ride out the series as originally scheduled with the possibility of playing a doubleheader on Sunday or playing an if necessary game on Oct. 6 after the end of the regularly scheduled games.

The good news for the Mets if the games are played this weekend is they have their three-headed rotation anchor of Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Chris Bassitt scheduled to go. Another positive for the Mets is that they only need to take one of the three games from the Braves to capture the head-to-head tiebreaker.
