Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is doing all that he can to keep the offense going as the team is in a fight for the division with the Braves. With the Mets down 4-0 in the fourth inning against the Marlins at Citi Field on Tuesday, Alonso got New York within striking distance with a three-run homer. Unfortunately, that was all the offense the Mets could muster in their 6-4 loss that lands them in a tie for first place with the Braves.

The Mets are tied, but Alonso has done everything he can to drive the offense with a home run in three straight games and seven home runs in his last 13 games. The slugger has 22 RBIs in that 13-game span and leads the majors with 26 RBIs in September. The RBI flurry in September has Alonso on top of Aaron Judge now for the major league lead with 131.

Alonso’s home run on Tuesday gave him 40 for the season, making him the first Met in franchise history with multiple seasons of at least 40 home runs. For the season, Alonso is hitting .270/.344/.524 with 27 doubles, 40 home runs, 131 RBIs, and a 3.7 fWAR in 154 games for the Mets. Alonso also reached the 300 total base plateau for the season, joining David Wright (team record 4 times), Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltrán, and Howard Johnson as the only Mets with multiple seasons of 300+ total bases.

The Mets enter the final seven games of the season tied with the Braves and if they hope to bring a division title to New York they will need Alonso to stay hot over the last week.
