The Mets (28-37) fell to the Marlins (23-43) by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday evening. New York’s offense struggled, managing only four hits and going 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position, leaving five on base. Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo combined to go 0-for-12 at the top of the batting order.

Tylor Megill (1-3) started for New York, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over 4.2 innings. He walked two and struck out eight, bringing his ERA to 3.16 for the season through five starts.


Miami struck first in the second inning after Jesús Sánchez hit a leadoff double and Tim Anderson drove him home with a two-out single. The Mets responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. J.D. Martinez was hit by a pitch, advanced on a Starling Marte single, and Mark Vientos doubled to bring both runners home and make it 2-1, New York.

Despite striking out eight through four innings, Megill began to struggle in the fifth, allowing two more Fish runs. Anderson singled, Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, and Bryan De La Cruz doubled to drive the runner home. With two on base, Jake Burger reached on a throwing error by Vientos, allowing Chisholm to score an unearned run an give the Marlins a 3-1 lead.

Megill was then lifted for Danny Young to get the last out, who closed out the frame with a strikeout.

Young, Sean Reid-Foley, and Drew Smith combined to toss three and 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, adding four strikeouts.

Adam Ottavino pitched the ninth, allowing a leadoff single to Otto Lopez, who stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Gordon, making it a final 4-2, Marlins.

The Mets went down in order in the ninth, failing to mount a comeback.

Mark Vientos earns Tuesday’s honor after knocking a two-run double for one of just four New York hits. This season, the the baseman is hitting .268/.278/.546 with five doubles and five home runs through 84 plate appearances.
