The Mets have designated lefty reliever Alex Torres for assignment tonight, and have acquired lefty reliever Eric O’Flaherty from the Oakland A’s for a player to be named later and cash.
O’Flaherty, 30, is a true lefty specialist in every sense, and has held left-handed batters to a .186 batting average in 50 plate appearances for the A’s with an incredible .495 opposing OPS.
However he has a 5.91 ERA on the season , so he should have no business being in there against right-handed hitters.
O’Flaherty is owed about $2 million for the rest of the season, and he is expected to be here in time for tomorrow night’s finale against the Miami Marlins.
He is a free agent after this season.
Alex Torres has been a disaster for the Mets over the last two months, and there was a real sense that he was in danger of being released over the past two weeks. He leaves the New York Mets with a 5.68 FIP and a 1.525 WHIP in 39 appearances. Good riddance, buddy.
With Jerry Blevins still on the sidelines and no timetable for his return, this is a huge move for the Mets and a clear sign that they are totally going for it.
Awesome move by Sandy… He has totally “revived” this team in the past 10 days.
Mets! Mets! Mets!
