wilmer flores

According to Kristie Ackert of the Daily News, the New York Mets are now considered moving Wilmer Flores from shortstop to second base when Daniel Murphy returns from the disabled list this weekend.

“The Mets sources pointedly said that this move was discussed not because Flores at shortstop wasn’t working, but because he played well at second base last year.”

“He played very well there at the end of last year,” a source said. “He turns the double play there better than anyone.”

Due to Dilson Herrera‘s struggles offensively, he is expected to be demoted back to Triple-A Las Vegas once Murphy is activated, opening up second base for Flores.

Ruben Tejada will of course take over at shortstop, while Murphy man’s third base until David Wright returns from the DL.

Wright, by the way, has still not been cleared for baseball activities and there remains no timetable for his return.

This defensive realignment is about two months too late, to be honest. But at least they’re getting it right in the end.
