Is this the return of those seemingly miracle Mets we saw in the first three months of 2012? Now posting W’s in six of their last seven contests, the Amazins’ sit just half a dozen games under the .500 mark.

Before Chris Young even entered today’s ballgame, he was handed a five run lead thanks to an offense outburst headed by Jason Bay… yes, Jason Bay. It started off with back to back doubles by Ronny Cedeno and Justin Turner, followed by a David Wright RBI groundout to draw blood first. Kelly Shoppach and Ike Davis would reach base to load the bases with two out for Jason Bay. Prior to today’s game, Bay was batting an anemic .095 with runners in scoring position in 2012, well below the Mendoza line. However, this time around, the Mets slumped left fielder drove the ball over the 392 in left center for a grand slam, the fifth of his career, providing quite a sight for sore eyes, including his own.

From then on it was a tale of getting in and out of jams for both Chris Young and the Marlins’ Mark Buehrle. Young got in and out of trouble up until the fifth where the Fish finally ended the shutout on a Justin Ruggiano double to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Young finished with a final line of five innings pitched, allowing one run on five hits, while walking one and striking out three, improving his record to 4-7 and lowering his ERA to 4.48.

After those first five frames, the bullpen added another four goose eggs to their resurgent performance. Parnell, Edgin, Rauch and Francisco combined for that quartet of shutout innings, allowing just one hit and punching out a pair, slamming the door on the Marlins to pick up their third straight victory.

Notes:

Overall on the day, Jason Bay went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, a much needed day for Bay in a last-ditch effort at some possible redemption. It was hit his fifth career grand slam  and his first since September 8, 2011 against the Braves.

Chris Young is now 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA in five career starts against the Marlins.

With his base-knock today, Ike Davis has now hit safely in 14 of his past 15 games.

Up Next:

The Mets are now off to St. Louis where Collin McHugh will make his second career start for the Mets against the Cardinals on Monday. Game time is 2:15 PM for the Labor Day matinee.
