The Mets (42-23) took the series over the Milwaukee Brewers (35-30) with a 5-4 triumph at Citi Field on Thursday evening. The win was backed by strong pitching from the bullpen, who combined to toss a scoreless five and 2/3 innings, and a two-run homer by Mark Canha.

The Mets hope not to add another starting pitcher to the injured list, as Thursday’s starter, Tylor Megill, exited his outing against Milwaukee in the fourth inning due to reported right shoulder discomfort. Before his departure, the right-hander tossed 3 1/3 innings. He left with the bases loaded, and all three runs came around to score with Chasen Shreve pitching.

New York initially took a 1-0 lead in the first with a Jeff McNeil RBI single, allowing Mark Canha to score. But the team tied the game 4-4 by the fifth inning. They picked up a run after McNeil walked and Luis Guillorme and Tomás Nido knocked a pair of singles in the fourth. The club scored two more runs in the fifth with a Mark Canha two-run homer to drive in Nick Plummer.

Following Megill’s departure, the trio of Chasen Shreve, Seth Lugo, and Drew Smith held the Brewers scoreless through the eighth. Seth Lugo tossed two innings, allowed just one hit and struck out four.

The Mets took a final 5-4 lead in the home half of the eighth inning. J.D. Davis led off with a single and Guillorme reached on a fielder’s choice and an error. With runners on first and third after a Milwaukee’s throwing error, Nick Plummer grounded into a force out to score pinch-runner Starling Marte. The call was challenged but ultimately upheld.

Edwin Diaz locked down the game in the ninth, but not before a crazy play ensued. With one out and Hunter Renfroe on first, pinch hitter Tyrone Taylor blooped a ball into right field. Renfroe tried scoring from first, but Plummer relayed the ball to Pete Alonso, who threw a strike to Nido, who tagged the lumbering Renfroe out.

Rather than there one out with men on second and third, Yelich came up with two outs and a man on third. Diaz’s nasty slider got the lefty swinging, and the Mets won.

Player of the Game: Seth Lugo

Seth Lugo earns Thursday’s honor after tossing two scoreless frames. He allowed just one hit and struck out four as he kept the Mets in the game. It was the best he’s looked all season.
