The New York Mets officially announced the signings of Starling Marte and Mark Canha Tuesday evening.
Marte, 33, signed a four-year contract. Marte receives a $5 million signing bonus. He’ll get $14.5 million in 2022 and $19.5 million in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
“Starling is a premier talent at a premier position,” Mets General Manager Billy Eppler said. “His play in the outfield makes the team stronger at run prevention up the middle and his elite base-running skills are a perfect blend. He has a winning attitude and will be a huge asset as well in our clubhouse.”
Marte split his season between Oakland and Miami in 2021. He ranked in the top-10 in each league in steals, making him the first player in major league history to accomplish the feat. He led the majors with 47 steals.
Canha, 32, signed a two-year contract with a club option for 2024. He receives a $2 million signing bonus. Canha is paid $12 million in 2022, $10.5 million in 2023, and the 2024 club option is worth $11.5 million with a $2 million buyout.
“Mark is an extremely versatile player, who has an elite ability to get on base,” Eppler said. “He has gap-to-gap power and can hit in any spot in the lineup.”
Canha has a .377 OBP over the last season which ranks second-highest in the AL over that stretch. His 8.3 fWAR since 2019 ranks fourth among AL outfielders behind only Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, and George SPringer.
