The Mets have activated Robinson Cano from the 10-day injured list after missing the last nine games with a groin strain.

Cano has quietly been the Mets’ best hitter this season. In 39 times at the plate, he’s posted a .283/.462/.559 slashline with a 184 wRC+ and a .435 wOBA.

In addition, his walk rate and strikeout percentage have both trended in a positive direction. Many of his underlying metrics also portray well for the 37-year-old.

Cano will split his duties between second base and designated hitter.

In a corresponding move for Cano, the Mets optioned reliever Drew Smith to the alternate training site. Smith opened some eyes with an impressive start to the season, but considering he’s one of the few expendable players on the roster, the move makes procedural sense. He has two more options left.

The right-hander has pitched six innings this season, permitting two runs and striking out six batters, in his return from Tommy John Surgery.
