john mayberry

It’s no secret that John Mayberry started out his Mets tenure mired in a dreadful slump. Coming into last night’s game, Mayberry was batting .137 with only seven hits all year.

Despite these numbers, Terry Collins decided to start the right handed slugger against Diamondbacks’ lefty Robbie Ray.

With a huge night at the plate, Mayberry rewarded his manager’s confidence. He collected four hits in five at-bats, including a two run bomb in the 9th inning to increase the Mes’ lead to 6-2.

“It’s great,” Mayberry said. “It’s good to get in there and help the team come out on top. Harvey had a great outing and it’s nice to pick him up.” (Anthony DiComo, MLB.com)

While Mayberry batted just .212 last season with seven home runs in 122 at bats, the Mets signed him to a one year contract during the winter. He was targeted by the front office due his stellar numbers against left handed pitching. Mayberry owns a career .838 OPS against them.

Even after last night’s game. Mayberry’s average still stands at .196, but hopefully this performance is a sign that he will begin to turn things around.
