Don’t sweat the small stuff… That’s what my Uncle used to tell me, but what does he know…  he’s a Yankees fan. The truth is the Mets have always got me sweating about something and oftentimes they have me sweating over bunch of stuff all at the same time.

Currently, my biggest concern is how rejected this Mets organization has become. They have been deemed a pariah as evidenced by how many former and current baseball executives have scoffed at the chance for a job that would pay them in upwards of $2 million dollars a year and maybe more. It really is embarrassing.

With November fast approaching and free agency and other baseball activities set to accelerate in the next few days, the Mets are still on the hunt for a President of Baseball Operations.

In the space of one week they have struck out on Theo Epstein, Billy Beane and David Stearns. All three of them — for one reason or another — decided that they wanted nothing to do with working for Sandy Alderson or Steve Cohen even if it meant millions for their coffers.

That’s a huge problem.

For one, it means that the Mets will now end up settling for someone who was never even one of their top choices… And two, I get the distinct feeling that this will end up being just another one of those good old-fashioned Mets debacles.

It’s frustrating to see that the Mets have now lowered their sights from big established names like Epstein, Beane and Stearns to a bunch of assistant GMs nobody ever heard of.

Honestly, when was the last time Alderson made a good decision for this organization? Anybody?

After a dreadful year that saw Alderson become the de facto POBO who then hired Jared Porter (sexual harassment) as GM and then Zack Scott (busted for DWI) as acting GM, who the heck feels comfortable with Alderson making any further critical decisions for the Mets?

I wish Steve Cohen had the gumption and shrewdness to tell Sandy to sit this one out and pick up the phone and not give up on getting us a proven commodity to run the team. There are plenty of execs out there we should be targeting before sinking to assistants and assistants to assistants.

One name who actually would’ve been at the top of my list from the get-go is John Mozeliak.

Yes, I know he’s already gainfully employed as the President of Baseball Operations for the St. Louis Cardinals, but if Steve Cohen is as rich and as dedicated to winning as he says he is, why not entice Mozeliak with some more money than he’s getting now?

It happens more often than you think in baseball and what’s the harm in asking? Plus from what I’ve been reading, Mozeliak might just be ready for a change of scenery.

I’ve always been envious of how the Cardinals are run going back years and years. I have always wished that for the Mets but it’s always been nothing more than a pipe-dream.

Mozeliak, 52, took over as general manager of the Cards in 2007 and all he’s managed to accomplish in that time is win three Executive of the Year awards while overseeing 14 consecutive winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, two National League pennants, and a World Series title.

Let me also point out that the St. Louis Cardinals’ payroll has never exceeded $115 million during his tenure, and that their minor league system is consistently among the best in baseball year in and year out.

I think I can live with all of that… Can you? Whaddaya say Steve?
