The Seattle Mariners have acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin in a trade with the Miami Marlins, as first reported by Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.
Maybin will likely serve as a right-handed bat off the bench as the Mariners wait to activate suspended second baseman Robinson Cano in the middle of August. In the meantime, they’ve been trying to keep afloat with playing Guillermo Heredia, but his .649 OPS in 264 plate appearances has obviously compelled Seattle to seek out a more impactful hitter off the bench, even if a rental.
Maybin is hitting just .237/.326/.356 over his last two seasons, but has stroked .333/.448/.500 since the end of the first half, and is slashing a much more sustainable .271/.386/.333 off the bench with the Marlins this season.
The Marlins will receive international bonus pool money as well as a player to be named later, adds Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
