New York Mets left-handed reliever Luis Avilan (left elbow soreness) made his first rehab appearance with Advanced-A St. Lucie on Saturday night, signaling his return to the Mets’ bullpen could be on the horizon.
Avilan, 29, was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 4 with discomfort in his pitching elbow.
Over one inning with St. Lucie (five batters faced; 24 pitches, 15 strikes), the veteran southpaw worked around two baserunners with one strikeout in a clean frame.
The Florida Fire Frog’s Shean Michel reached on a fielding error with one out and Riley Delgado drew a two-out walk, but Avilan induced an inning-ending groundout via Trey Harris to escape the jam,
Over 11 appearances with the Mets (10.2 innings), Avilan’s pitched to a 9.28 ERA and 5.23 FIP with 11 strikeouts, five walks, and a 2.06 WHIP.
The eight-year MLB veteran signed a one-year, $1.6 million deal with the Mets in January.
We’ll keep you posted as Avilan’s rehab assignment continues.
