Pedro Gomez, an ESPN Reporter for their program SportsCenter for nearly two decades, a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America, and a widely beloved personality, has died unexpectedly at 58-years-old.

“Pedro was far more than a media personality. He was a Dad, loving husband, loyal friend, coach and mentor,” Gomez’s family released in a statement. “He was our everything and his kids’ biggest believer. He died unexpectedly at home this afternoon.”

A former beat reporter for the Oakland Athletics, and reporter for the Arizona Republic, Gomez joined ESPN in 2003 where he remained until his untimely passing.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn that our friend and colleague Pedro Gomez has passed away,” said president of ESPN James Pitaro. “Pedro was an elite journalist at the highest level and his professional accomplishments are universally recognized. More importantly, Pedro was a kind, dear friend to us all. Our hearts are with Pedro’s family and all who love him at this extraordinarily difficult time.”

During his career as a reporter, Gomez covered 25 World Series and 22 All-Star Games.

We here at MetsMerized send Gomez’s family and his ESPN family our sincerest condolences.
