The 2019 season has a whirlwind for left-handed reliever Justin Wilson after signing a two-year deal in the offseason to bolster the Mets bullpen.
Wilson, 32, had a 4.82 ERA through his first 10 appearances with the Mets and also had an issue with his elbow that landed him on the injured list multiple times.
He finally came off the IL on July 2 for good, and he’s been one of the better relievers in baseball since to help bolster a struggling Mets pen.
Since coming off the IL, Wilson has a 1.40 ERA, 29 strikeouts, and .223 average against in 25 2/3 innings.
The veteran has pitched himself into a new role on the Mets as well.
On Saturday night against the Dodgers he was brought in to secure a 3-0 lead in the ninth inning. He would make it look easy by striking out Max Muncy, getting Chris Taylor on a flyout, and forced MVP candidate Cody Bellinger into a groundout to end the game.
It was the second straight outing with a save for Wilson as Mets manager Mickey Callaway leans heavily on him and Seth Lugo to close out games.
