General manager Sandy Alderson tells Tim Rohan in the Times there is no consideration — for now, at least — to have Juan Lagares undergo surgery on his balky right elbow. “We never seriously considered surgery at any time,” Alderson tells Rohan. “It’s something that, if it gets worse, we may reconsider. But at this point, it’s not something we’re contemplating. It’s about this season. Not next season.”

After Richie Shaffer homered in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the Rays up 4-3, the next batter Brandon Guyer flied out to right field.

Here’s the call from Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez:

Ron: This ball is lifted to the right side and [Daniel] Murphy is drifting toward it but [Kelly] Johnson settles under it and makes the out.

Ron: Umm… I mean Lagares, pardon…

Keith: Wow, interesting Ronnie… Lagares went to right field and Cespedes stayed in center.

Ron: That really is interesting. I caught myself and I was going to say Lagares is making the catch but then I thought Lagares can’t be making the catch.

Ron: But it’s true Lagares is playing right field and Cespedes is in center. An interesting move by Terry Collins.

Ron: I guess for some reason they don’t want to move Michael Conforto to right? I guess that’s the reason?

Ron: But still, if you’re a gold glove player last season, and you’ve already been relegated to the bench, and now you don’t even play your gold glove position, that can’t be good Keith.

Keith: Yeah… and also to add to it, wouldn’t you want your strongest arm in right field?

After the game, manager Terry Collins said he put Lagares in right field because nobody else ever played there before and that he saw Lagares play right field in the minors and liked what he saw. Lagares also played nine games in right in 2013. It was certainly weird seeing him out there.
