John Maine Out For The Season?

Just before the start of today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that the team will be closely monitoring John Maine before he makes his next start.

John Maine, as most of you know by now, has a bone spur in the back of his shoulder as well as a strained rotator cuff that has already landed him on the DL once this season.

Jerry Manuel said that if he does not like what he sees, Maine could be shut down for the remainder of the season.

Yesterday the Mets said that John Maine would continue to pitch despite the current diagnosis, but today they were certainly singing a different tune.

Losing John Maine for the rest of the season would certainly be a big blow for the Mets, but shutting him down and having him go for the surgery now, would give John Maine eight months to recover so he can be ready for Spring Training in 2009.

The Mets need to do the right thing and think about the bigger picture.
