According to Mike Puma of New York Post, Mets infielder Jed Lowrie is scheduled to begin his long-awaited rehab assignment on Tuesday night. He is expected to be in the starting lineup as the DH.

Lowrie, who signed a two-year, $20 million deal in the offseason, has dealt with a myriad of injuries this year and has yet to play a single game for the Mets.

Lowrie did play some rehab games for the Mets earlier this year, batting .161/.235/.258 in 34 plate appearances between High-A St. Lucie and Triple-A Syracuse, before he suffered another setback and was shut down. Tuesday night will be his first game action since going 0-4 for the Syracuse Mets on May 11.

If healthy, Lowrie could be a very good addition to this Mets offense which could use a boost in the thick of a Wild Card race. Lowrie is 35, but posted a 4.9 fWAR last year and 3.6 the year prior, both for the Athletics. He has a 106 wRC+ and 20.1 fWAR over the course of his 11-year MLB career, spanning 4492 plate appearances.

Manager Mickey Callaway expressed his confidence in Lowrie beginning another rehab assignment, telling reporters, “He’s in a good enough spot to go out and DH today.”

With Brandon Nimmo also participating in rehab games for Syracuse now, the Mets could have reinforcements coming very soon to give the offense a much-needed jolt.
