The New York Mets (4-3) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (3-4) by a score of 4-3 tonight at Citizens Bank Park.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom got the nod for the Mets this evening in Philadelphia and tossed six quality innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out three as well as walking two.

After a rough first inning, deGrom buckled down and finished the next five innings with a lot of guile to keep the Mets in the ballgame.

Josh Smoker and Jerry Blevins combined to pitch the seventh inning, as the inning ended on a horrible pitch from Blevins that winded up working to the Mets benefit as they caught Howie Kendrick between first and second.

Blevins started the eighth, but the frame was finished off by Hansel Robles, who bailed Blevins out after the southpaw got into hot water.

Addison Reed came on for the save in the ninth with a 4-2 lead and allowed a home run to Brock Stassi, but settled down to shut the door for the Mets and seal the win.

Offense:

Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff stymied the Mets for the first few frames, until the red hot Jay Bruce stepped into the dish in the fourth inning and promptly took Eickhoff deep to cut the deficit to a then 2-1 score.

In the seventh inning, Bruce led off the stanza with a walk and advanced to third on a Curtis Granderson single and a throwing error from Phillies infielder Cesar Hernandez.

Bruce came around to score to knot the game up on a sacrifice fly from Neil Walker.

Then in the eighth inning, you guessed it, Jay Bruce played Superman yet again and parked an absolute bomb into the second deck in right field.

Before Bruce came to bat, there was some drama when reliever Edubray Ramos threw over the head of Asdrubal Cabrera, sparking an emphatic shouting match between the two who have bad blood from last season when Cabrera had his epic bat-flip after a walk-off  home run off Ramos at Citi Field.

With his two long balls on the evening, Jay Bruce is now tied for the major league lead with four home runs.

Oppositely, Jose Reyes has started the season 1-for-27 (.037), the worst start to the shortstop’s career.

On deck:

The Mets will look for the series victory tomorrow night in Philly, with Matt Harvey (1-0, 2.70 ERA) toeing the rubber for the Mets and Clay Buchholz (0-0, 7.20 ERA) getting the ball for the Phillies.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
