Jason Vargas continued to impress on the mound Tuesday night, this time helping the New York Mets to earn a split in the Bronx against the New York Yankees. After watching the Mets get pounded by the same team earlier in the day, Vargas helped to guide the Metropolitans in a 10-4 nightcap victory.

It was another day and another quality start for Jason as he pitched six innings while allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three on his way to another quality start, his third consecutive one of the like.

Vargas spoke of his game plan for pitching in the Bronx on Tuesday.

“I was just really trying to keep the ball down as much as possible once they started to get runners on, just because of the ability for the ball to get out of the ballpark here, especially down the right-field line,” Vargas said. “The game plan was to just keep forcing the issue and staying down. It was either going to be us or them in that inning if we kept trying to force that issue.” (NY Post)

The 36-year-old southpaw really only had one inning of danger when he allowed three runs to cross in the third inning, the only one in which he allowed any scoring. He talked about that inning as well as what he thinks helped him get out of it.

Once a pitcher who could not make it to the fifth inning, Vargas has now done so in four straight starts, putting together a nice streak of goodwill after being given a vote of confidence.

Manager, Mickey Callaway spoke on Vargas’ recent success and, as can be heard in the audio clip provided by Rich Coutinho, the pitch that he believes is so vital to Vargas.

“This is who we signed. This is who we wanted,” Callaway said. “Rough 6 ¹/₃ or whatever it was to start the season this year, and then he’s been lights out. So this is who he is, this is who he’s been, this is who we signed. It’s just good to see. You want your fifth starter out there doing what he’s doing.”

With Tuesday’s win, Vargas improved his record to 3-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.68, good enough to be second-lowest in the team’s starting rotation only to Jacob deGrom. His WHIP currently stands at 1.36 and has a FIP of 4.14.

Jason Vargas has slowly become one of the team’s most consistent pitchers over the past month.
