The New York Mets’ 2018 first-round and No. 6 overall pick Jarred Kelenic has begun his professional career by playing for the Gulf Coast League Mets. His tenure in the GCL is expected to be short, as Kelenic, who received a $4.5 million signing bonus under the slot value, is expected to take batting practice at Citi Field on Wednesday before being promoted to the Kingsport Mets.

The lefty-hitting outfielder made his professional debut on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a triple as the DH. He then went 2-for-5 on Saturday, playing center field for the first time. Yesterday, in his third career game, he went 3-for-4 again, this time with a double and a stolen base. Keeping the relatively low level of competition in mind, Kelenic is 8-for-13 to start his pro career with a double and a triple.

It’s obviously been a nice start for him, with three productive multi-hit games, and it will be interesting to watch if he can sustain this type of performance consistently when he gets promoted to Kingsport on Wednesday.

GCL games are not available for viewing unfortunately, but here’s a video of his three hits from his debut.
