After his historic 2021 season, it looks like the New York Mets will have some competition to bring back left-hander Aaron Loup this season.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are among many teams talking to the crafty left-hander. He also notes that Loup could be one of the better players on the market to sign relatively quickly.

Loup signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Mets last offseason. He proved to be an absolute steal, as he put together easily one of the best seasons by a reliever in franchise history.

Over 65 innings pitched, he posted an incredible 0.65 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, allowed just one home run, and struck out 57 batters. Following the All-Star break, he allowed just one run and 13 hits over 14 outings.

The Mets will certainly face a lot more competition for Loup’s services this time around. Luckily, they do have some favors working in their favor, as Loup said towards the end of the season that he’d love to return to New York.

“I’ve had a blast playing here, I’ve had fun with the guys all year long, and I’ve had a great year, so I see no reason not to,” Loup said.

Loup was easily one of, if not, the Mets’ best pitcher not named Jacob deGrom last season. If the lefty were to sign with Philly, or elsewhere, it would be a tremendous loss to an already shaky Mets bullpen.
