Matt Harvey has not had the best season so far, to say the least.

After struggling through four starts in the rotation, the right-hander was moved to the bullpen and was not very effective in his first appearance as he allowed one run in two innings against the St.Louis Cardinals.

The next day he proceeded to decline when asked to speak to the media as he started laughing at them.

Last night, Harvey made his second appearance out of the bullpen. With a 5-0 lead in the ninth inning, Mickey Callaway decided to turn to him.

Harvey did not exactly pitch well, but he got the job done. He allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, Franchy Cordero, and then walked Jose Pirela in the next at-bat.

The team started to get nervous he would implode so they had Jeurys Familia warming up just in case.

However, Harvey was able to settle down as he got Carlos Asuaje to fly out to Juan Lagares and then got Freddy Galvis to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.

That secured the win for the Mets, and also marked the first time Matt Harvey had been on the mound in the ninth inning since Game 5 of the 2015 World Series.

Harvey’s fastball ranged from 90-93 for the inning he pitched, which was down from the 93-94 he was consistently hitting in his first relief outing. His ERA rose to 6.00 on the season.

While the right-hander did not address his refusal to speak with the press earlier this week, he did discuss his feelings on his outing last night.

“It’s not ideal giving up runs in that short period of time. Not what I want to do and it’s something if I’m going to be out there I want to be effective and used in tight situations. Hopefully, we can get to that point with more work and comfort.”

He did admit that there is an adjustment period he is going through right now, as he tries to transition from pitching every fifth day to the random usage he expects to receive.

“Just getting used to the preparation. You know, just going down there and seeing how guys get ready and see how guys like Jerry (Blevins) get ready for the work he has to do and AJ (Ramos). I’m just trying to learn from them and pick up little things that may help let loose.”

“Obviously, there’s a difference with the prep and the stretch that you go through as a starter, so I’m just trying to find ways for me to be more ready.”
