Jacob deGrom started his sixth game of the season last night against the San Diego Padres and was nothing short of great.
He pitched 7 1/3 innings shutout innings and struck out eight batters, while allowing only five hits and three walks.
The 29-year old also received the win, which he had struggled to come by his previous two outings despite arguably being just as dominant.
DeGrom’s ERA dipped down to 2.06 on the year and he moved to 3-0 on the season record wise.
Mickey Callaway really likes what he sees from the right-hander and points his success to one thing in particular.
“Really just going out there and mixing his pitches well. He’s got great stuff, but he’s using the information and mixing his pitches and he’s kind of exposing the hitters’ weaknesses at times instead of just trying to throw the ball over the plate. He’s attacking and trying to expose their weaknesses. ”
DeGrom notices the difference this season too as he feels that all of his pitches seem to be coming out more naturally, as detailed by Matt Ehalt of The Record.
“Everything has been coming out easier. My off-speed has more downward movement instead of across the zone.”
The Mets should only be hoping this lasts as he has been as effective this season as anyone in baseball.
On top of it, he has been giving the team’s bullpen much needed rest this season as he leads the team in innings pitched with 39 1/3, which is also fifth highest in all of baseball.
