Former first round pick Dominic Smith‘s tenure with the New York Mets organization has been a roller coaster ride to say the least.

From his high prospect status, to weight loss-weight gain-weight loss, and now the experiment in the outfield, Smith’s future with the team is murky. Especially with the rise of fellow first baseman, Peter Alonso.

With that being said, Smith should, at the very least, have an opportunity to play everyday in the majors for the remainder of the season.

Many fans have been outraged that Alonso hasn’t been called up, and I agree, he should be up here. However, if the team has no intentions of doing that like it seems, then Smith should be up here manning first.

On Friday, New York trotted out Jose Bautista yet again, this time at first base. In the outfield, they started Jack Reinheimer.

It’s been well documented and discussed how the Mets have favored the veteran players this year and that has remained so, even with the team well out of playoff contention.

That’s why it’s so frustrating to see Smith, a 23-year-old kid, playing in the minors when he could be up here.

This would be good for a couple reasons. The most important of which is that he is young and would be much more beneficial to see play than an aging veteran who is not part of the team’s future.

Secondly, though, if the Mets believe Peter Alonso is the future, than promote Smith and try to enhance his trade value during these last six weeks.

I don’t expect to see Smith until September at this point, and with the way the team has handled young players this year, I don’t expect him to even play that much as long as Bautista, Wilmer Flores and Jay Bruce are on the team.

But we can only hope that somehow, Smith comes to the majors soon and is able to perform. It could be worth it for all parties.
