The Mets completed a winning homestand with their first three-game home sweep this season after a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies this afternoon at Citi Field.
Dillon Gee delivered yet another dominant performance as he held Colorado to just one earned run, using his outstanding changeup and slider to keep batters off-balance all afternoon. Gee scattered eight hits and walked none in 7.2 innings while striking out three. His one miscue was a solo homerun in the fourth.
Gee’s command was incredible today and he kept the ball down which is key for him. You can now see how confident he has become when he’s on that mound. He has a presence about him that wasn’t there before and his current 13 game stretch has been phenomenal. He has stepped up and has now become a mainstay for this rotation and a perfect compliment to our fireballers.
Gee was helped out by some crisp defense and tight play behind him today and I’m really liking what I’m seeing from this team defensively. After Marlon Byrd picked up an outfield assist early in the game, I did some quick research and found out that Mets center fielders lead the league with 12 outfield assists and Mets right fielders are second with 10 assists. Pretty impressive…
Offensively, the Mets only had six hits, but were able to push across a pair of runs which was enough for the win. I loved watching Wilmer Flores come back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk in his first at-bat, his next time up he forced home the tying run with a groundout in the fourth, and the second run scored on an Anthony Recker sac fly. Hey, whatever it takes. 🙂
LaTroy Hawkins earned his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the deal for the Mets. Hawkins has quietly given the Mets a great season with a 2.86 ERA and has provided the pen with a much needed veteran presence.
We’re off to Arizona where Jeremy Hefner (4-8, 4.23 ERA) will oppose lefthander Patrick Corbin (12-3, 2.33) at 9:40 PM. Hefner will need to get things sorted out as the Mets have won only once in his last five starts. He has struggled since the All Star break.
