dillon gee

Sandy Alderson announced on Sunday that Dillon Gee was uncomfortable before throwing his scheduled bullpen this afternoon, and that the team decided to “back off” and cancel it.

The Mets GM gave no further specifics other than to say that his expected return on June 5th now looks unrealistic.

Initially, Gee was expected to miss two starts, but on Thursday he told reporters it was more like three starts and that he wanted to pitch in at least one rehab game before being officially activated.

He was placed on the 15-Day DL on May 15 with a strained right lat, and as I wrote back then, these types of injuries can always be very tricky.

Gee was in the midst of a phenomenal season, boasting a 2.73 ERA and a 3-1 record in eight starts. We hope the Mets righthander gets back as soon as he’s 100 percent.

On a positive note, the team can get now an extended look at rookies Jacob deGrom and Rafael Montero who could each make another two starts before Gee is activated.

This could give the front office more critical information before deciding who ultimately stays in the rotation and who goes to the bullpen.
