The Mets won two games in a row! The Mets yesterday had a come from behind victory against the Yankees, and several cosmic events aligned to make it happen. Outside of one inning where Wheeler allowed 2 runs, he was quite good in a long outing (probably to showcase his stuff).

After blowing through a lot of pitches early he settled down and had a nice rhythm. Michael Conforto came through a critical time, knocking in the go-ahead runs to put the Mets in the lead. Edwin Diaz was able to overcome an infield hit that should have been an error (my opinion) and an interesting safe call on a stolen base to lock down the end of the game. And the Mets snapped the Yankee’s homer streak!

Jason Vargas will look to keep the good times rolling today. He is 3-3 over 14 games and 13 starts with 66.1 innings posting a 3.66 ERA, 4.37 FIP, 1.281 WHIP, and 111 ERA+. He’s been steady in his last three starts allowing two earned runs in each, but nine runs total, leading to a 3.60 ERA over 15 innings. Opponents are hitting only .148 against him and getting on at a .246 clip. He did start against the Yankees earlier this year allowing three runs over six innings from seven hits and two walks (also setting up an uncommon situation where he and Wheeler started both games of both two-game series vs the Yankees in 2019). The Yankees have the following numbers against him:

The Mets bats draw Domingo German who is returning from the IL today. On the season he has pitched in 13 games and made 12 starts totaling 70 innings with a 3.86 ERA, 4.10 FIP, 1.114 WHIP, and 117 ERA+. Before landing on the injured list after his start on the seventh, he had a bad stretch of three starts allowing 14 runs over 14.2 innings from 21 hits and three walks. During that time he allowed seven homers. He started against the Mets twice last year allowing seven runs over 9.2 innings from 10 hits and two walks. Three of those 10 hits were homers. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Game Notes

A win tonight would give the Mets their first season series win over the Yankees since 2013 (4-0). The last time the Mets swept a two-game series from the Yankees was May 12-13, 2014 at Yankee Stadium. The last time the Mets swept a two-game series from the Yankees in Queens was May 27-28, 2013. The Mets are 2-1 against the Yankees this year. The two teams split a doubleheader on June 11 at Yankee Stadium. The Mets were 3-3 vs. the Yankees last year (2-1 at Yankee Stadium and 1-2 at Citi Field).

The Mets are 5-3 vs. the American League this year. New York went 8-12 during Interleague play last year. The Mets are tied with the Cubs for the best winning percentage (.508, 198-192) among NL teams since Interleague play began in 1997.

Jeff McNeil leads the major leagues with a .351 batting average. He is seeking to become the second Mets player to lead the National League in batting average at the All-Star break. In 2011, Jose Reyes had a .354 batting average at the break, which topped all of MLB. McNeil is the first player to lead the major leagues in batting average in July or later in his rookie or sophomore season since Ichiro Suzuki led through July 25, 2002, his second season. The Mets have homered in 27 of their last 29 games, belting 49 blasts in that span. The Mets have hit 65 home runs at Citi Field in 38 games this season. The team hit 75 in 81 games in 2018. The Mets have homered in 23 of their last 24 home games, belting 41 blasts in that span.

He is batting .376 (32-85) with 16 runs, five doubles, a triple, five home runs, 12 RBI, 10 walks and a 1.083 OPS in 32 games at Citi Field this season. Over his last 25 games, Davis is batting .339 (21-62) with 10 runs, three doubles, a triple, three homers, eight RBI, four walks and a .953 OPS. He has hit safely in all six of his career games vs. the Yankees, going 7-21 (.333) with a double, three homers, seven RBI and five runs scored.

Let’s Go Mets!
