The Mets are only 1.5 games back in the Wild Card race! Winners of 12 of their last 13, the Mets won Tuesday night thanks to another great post-trade-deadline start from Zack Wheeler, Wilson Ramos’ big bat, and a Pete Alonso jack to boot. Now the Mets have one more matinee game against the Marlins before an off-day and then a much tougher schedule.

Steven Matz is 6-7 over 22 games and 20 starts tossing 103.2 innings with a 4.60 ERA, 4.77 FIP, 1.399 WHIP, and 89 ERA+. He’s coming off a rough start where he fell apart after a couple of strong innings, allowing five runs over 3.2 innings from six hits and a walk.

Before that start, in the month of July, he allowed only four runs over 20 innings with opponents hitting against him with a .266 OBP and .629 OPS. In two starts against the Marlins this year, he has tossed nine innings against them allowing five runs, but only three earned, off two homers, 11 hits, and two walks while striking out nine. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

The Mets bats will get a look at Jordan Yamamoto. Does that sound familiar? He was originally supposed to start the game Tuesday, listed as a probable pitcher early in the morning before the Marlins called up Hector Noesi. The 23-year-old rookie, Yamamoto, is 4-2 over his first nine starts in the majors with a 3.94 ERA, 3.88 FIP, 1.042 WHIP, and 106 ERA+.

Since July 21, he has hit his first rough patch as a major league player. He has made three starts pitching 14 innings allowing 13 hits and 15 runs with opponents getting on base at a .323 clip and hitting to a .841 OPS. Before this tumble, he was enjoying a 1.59 ERA. .258 Opponent OBP and .418 Opponent OPS over six starts and 34 innings. This will be his first start against the Mets.

Game Notes

The Mets have scored in the first inning in each of their last six games, the longest stretch by the club since they also had a six-game streak from April 30-May 6, 2017. The Mets rank second in the majors with 85 first-inning runs, behind
Cincinnati (96). New York is batting .309 in the first inning, second in the majors behind the Reds (.311).

Michael Conforto has 99 home runs for his career. He is now tied for 14th place with George Foster on the Mets all-time home run list. Conforto is looking to become the 14th player in franchise history to hit at least 100 home runs for
the club.

Pete Alonso has 81 RBI, seven more than Darryl Strawberry had in 1983. Alonso has extended the club rookie record for extra-base hits in a season. He has 61 extra-base hits. Ty Wigginton (2003) and Ike Davis (2010) held the previous
mark with 53. Alonso has hit 36 homers. Darryl Strawberry had the old mark with 26.

The Mets starters have posted a 10-2 record with a 2.16 ERA (29 earned runs/121 innings) with 29 walks and 127 strikeouts over their last 19 outings. The starting staff’s 2.16 ERA is the second-lowest in the majors and the best in the NL. The Astros (2.16) and Indians (2.90) are the only other teams with a starters’ ERA under 3.00 since July 18.

J.D. Davis has safely reached base in each of his last 15 starts at home. He is batting .421 (24-57) with 14 runs, six doubles, a triple, three homers, 10 RBI, seven walks a steal, a .477 OBP, a .719 SLG and a 1.196 OPS in that span. Overall in 43 home games this year, Davis is batting .396 (42-106) with 23 runs, nine doubles, a triple, seven homers, 17 RBI, 15 walks, a .472 OBP, a .698 SLG and a 1.170 OPS. His 1.170 OPS at home ranks third in the majors among players with at least 100 plate appearances.

Let’s go Mets!
