RHP Zac Gallen (3-4, 2.50) vs. RHP Zack Wheeler (10-7, 4.33)
SNY • WCBS 880 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The first step in taking the series from the Diamondbacks is winning game 1, and the Mets did that last night. Pete Alonso was the offensive stud of the game, hitting two homers bringing his season total to 47 and dangerously close to the rookie record of 52. Jacob deGrom was deGrom, shutting down the Diamondbacks offense for 7.0 innings and Callaway didn’t mess with his start, allowing Lugo to pitch two innings to protect the win.

Now the Mets just need to do that three more times. And then for the rest of the season too. Easy, right?

Zack Wheeler will look to keep the team moving in the right direction tonight. He is 10-7 over 27 starts and 166.1 innings with a 4.33 ERA, 3.68 FIP, 1.311 WHIP and 94 ERA+. In his last twos tarts he has allowed a total of 2 runs off 14 hits and 11.0 innings against the Phillies and the Nationals. Against the Diamondbacks at the end of May he allowed 4 runs off 7 hits and no walks in 7.0 innings of work while striking out 9. The Diamondbacks have the following numbers against Wheeler:

The Mets will get a look at Zac Gallen with a new team. He’s 3-4 over 13 starts and 68.1 innings in his rookie year with a 2.50 ERA, 3.35 FIP, 1.229 WHIP and 176 ERA+. After 7 starts with the Marlins he was traded at the deadline to the Diamondbacks for Jazz Chisholm (he was traded in 2017 from the Cardinals in the Marcell Ozuna trade – so his name is already associated with trades with big players and big prospects). Since becoming a Diamondback he is 2-1 over 6 games and 32.0 innings with a 2.25 ERA, 1.281 WHIP, 3.09 FIP and 201 ERA+. Zac is coming off of a 7.0 inning start against the White Sox where he allowed 1 hit and 1 walk and that’s it. He’s only had one other start like that. Against the Mets back in July, Zac pitched 5.0 innings allowing 2 runs from 4 hits and 5 walks. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Game Notes

Robinson Cano is hitting .471/.500/.853 with 10 runs, three homers, and seven RBI in his last 10 games.

Pete Alonso’s 34-game on-base streak is the longest by a rookie since Logan Morrison’s 42-game streak for the Marlins in 2010.

Let’s Go Mets!
