The New York Mets (16-19) were defeated by the San Diego Padres (20-16) by a score of 4-0 Monday night at Petco Park. Rookie starting pitcher Chris Paddack continued his dominance, pitching 8 2/3 shutout innings, striking out 11 Mets and allowing only four hits. (Box Score)

Hitting

The Padres rolled out their prized young starter Chris Paddack and he was electric, showcasing a mid-90s fastball, outstanding change-up, and solid-but-still-improving curveball. He struck out eight batters in the first four innings alone, ending with 11 strikeouts on the night. Two of those strikeouts were Pete Alonso, with whom Paddack decided to start a rivalry for some reason.

The 23-year-old pitched into the eighth inning, but with two outs in the frame, Jeff McNeil registered his second hit of the night. At 91 pitches, that would be it for Paddack, despite his self-proclaimed nemesis Alonso due up next. Across 8 2/3 innings, Paddack allowed zero runs on four hits and one walk while striking out 11. He was very, very impressive.

Craig Stammen came in for relief in the eighth inning with a runner on first and two outs and struck out Alonso to end the threat. He stayed in for the ninth now that the Padres sported a 4-0 lead, and with a 1-2-3 inning, he recorded his second career save as the Padres won.

The Mets have now scored seven runs in their last six games.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and did not allow a hit until a single in the fourth inning. The Padres first got to deGrom when Hunter Renfroe, who hit a pinch-hit walk-off grand slam Sunday afternoon, hit a wall-scraper over the left field wall to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Jake cruised until running into trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning when Eric Hosmer lined a single and Renfroe doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Ty France then lined a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Hosmer and giving the Padres a 2-0 lead.

With a runner on second and two outs, instead of intentionally walking Wil Myers to face weak-hitting Austin Hedges, Mickey Callaway opted to pitch to Myers who worked a 12-pitch walk. Hedges then hit a sinking liner to left field that was caught by a sliding McNeil, ending the inning and deGrom’s night: 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 103 pitches.

Justin Wilson, back from the Injured List on Monday, was tasked with pitching the bottom of the eighth inning. After getting two quick outs, a Manuel Margot infield hit and Manny Machado base hit to left field put runners on first and second. After falling behind Eric Hosmer, a healthy 3-0 hack and another swing-and-a-miss brought the count full with Renfroe on deck.

With the runners going on the pitch, Hosmer lined a double to the right-center field gap, bringing in both runs to make it a 4-0 game. Wilson then got Renfroe to ground out to end the inning.

It is worth noting that even though Wilson had been on the injured list for a couple weeks, the Mets chose not to send him for a rehab assignment.
