The New York Mets (44-60) suffered the most lopsided single-game loss in their franchise history as they were defeated 25-4 by the Washington Nationals (53-53) on Tuesday night at Nationals Park.
Pitching
Washington jumped on Steven Matz early and often. Trea Turner leadoff the game with a single, he then stole both second and third. A batter later, Bryce Harper doubled to right to give the Nats a 1-0 lead.
Harper then came around to score on a Ryan Zimmerman RBI single. Juan Soto then singled, followed by a Daniel Murphy RBI single. After Matz struck out Michael Taylor, he walked Matt Wieters. However, Tanner Roark lined a bases-clearing double to make it 6-0 Washington.
Turner lined his second single of the inning, followed by an Anthony Rendon RBI single to put up a seven-run first inning and end Matz’s night. He allowed eight hits as well and recorded just two outs.
Jacob Rhame relieved Matz and needed just two pitches to get Harper to fly out to right to finally end the bottom of the first.
The Nationals added three more runs in the second off of Rhame. After Soto singled the other way, Murphy smacked a two-run home run to right. Taylor followed the homer up with a triple off the left-center fence, he later scored on a Wieters single to make it 10-0 in the second.
Rhame served up a two-out, three-run home run to Murphy, his second of the game, to increase the lead to 13-0. Taylor followed that up with a single to end Rhame’s night after allowed six runs on seven hits.
Tim Peterson retired Wieters, as he popped out to put an end to the third inning. Peterson issues a two out walk to Rendon, he then scored from first on a Harper double. Zimmerman followed that up with a two run shot to right to make it 16-0 in the fourth.
With two outs in the fifth, Tyler Bashlor walked a pair, then allowed a single to Roark to load the bases. Rendon then lined a bases clearing double to right center to make it 19-0 Nationals.
Jerry Blevins entered with a man on second, and retired Harper to end the bottom of the fifth. Blevins then threw the Mets first scoreless inning of the night, as he stranded two in the sixth.
Drew Smith allowed a one out, infield single to Turner but was able to work a second straight scoreless inning for the Mets.
Jose Reyes, yes you read that correctly, allowed a two run home run to Matt Adams, a three run home run to Matt Reynolds, and a Wilmer Difo RBI triple to make it 25-1.
Hitting
Wilmer Flores roped a two out double to the left field corner, his eighteenth double of the year, he was removed from the game in the bottom of the inning due to an apparent injury.
Kevin Plawecki led off the third with a single, but he was stranded there.
Austin Jackson lined a one out single to center in the fifth. However, Plawecki and Tim Peterson struck out to end the inning.
Jeff McNeil got the Mets on the board with a solo shot to right, the first home run of his big league career.
Brandon Nimmo broke a 0-for-10 stretch with a two-out single in the eighth.
Michael Conforto lined a leadoff double followed by a Jose Reyes single in the top of the ninth. Conforto came in to score on a McNeil fielders choice, followed by a Jackson two-run home run to cut the lead to 25-4.
