The New York Mets (52-68) fell to the Philadelphia Phillies (67-54) by a score of 9-6 in the second game of the two teams’ doubleheader on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Pitching

Steven Matz (5-10, 4.60 ERA) made his first start since landing on the disabled list and did not perform well at all. He lasted a mere two innings while giving up five hits, six runs (four earned) and one walk while punching out two Phillies. He has now given up 13 runs (11 earned) over his last 2 2/3 innings pitched.

Paul Sewald was the first called out of the bullpen and he provided the Mets with a much-needed 1-2-3 inning in the third.

Drew Smith came into the game in the fourth and pitched a scoreless frame. He then stayed on for the fifth and did the same. He lowered his season’s ERA from 2.00 to 1.64.

Bobby Wahl pitched the sixth and struggled in his one inning of work. He gave up a run on a Cesar Hernandez RBI double and a run on a Nick Williams‘ RBI single which was originally ruled an out before being overturned.

Tyler Bashlor was called upon to pitch the seventh inning and gave up a run before recording an out. He continued pitching however, and was able to get six outs without giving up any more runs.

Offense

After a franchise-record 24 runs scored in the first game of the doubleheader, the Mets offense came nowhere close to that number in the second game as they scored six runs.

Things looked promising at the beginning of the game as Amed Rosario and Jeff McNeil doubled to get on base, and Michael Conforto drove them in with a double of his own.

However, the Mets would not score again until the seventh inning when Rosario drove in a run on a double and Conforto drove in his third run of the game with a single.

The Mets had a little fight left in him in the ninth as they scored two more runs. Conforto drove in his fourth run of the game with a single and Wilmer Flores hit a RBI single of his own to put the Mets within three runs of the Phillies as well as put the tying run on base. Jose Bautista then struck out to end the game, however.

In total the Mets had nine hits and five walks in addition to their six runs. Rosario and Conforto picked up where they left off in the first game and had great days overall. Rosario went 6-for-11 with one walk, seven runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base. Conforto went 6-for-12 with three runs scored and five RBI.

On Deck

Noah Syndergaard (8-2, 3.22 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets tomorrow looking for his third win in a row as he faces off against Aaron Nola (13-3, 2.28 ERA) who is trying to boost his resume for the National League Cy Young award. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EDT and the game will be broadcast on SNY and 710 WOR.
